Beyond the philosophical notion of human-centered intelligence and toward an extended science of intelligence, including animal, artificial, and alien minds

In Defense of LLMs

This site makes two simple claims. First, leading LLM-based systems already outperform people on some difficult reasoning tasks. Second, human reasoning is not uniform or context-free: education, notation, memory, tools, and circumstances all shape how well we think.

Evidence boundary: benchmark results show performance on specific tasks. Claims about thought, understanding, consciousness, selfhood, and desire require separate philosophical arguments.

Evidence, plainly stated

Result first; detail when you want it

What these results show

AI systems can outperform people on some demanding tasks and still fail badly on others. Human reasoning is also uneven and sensitive to context. These cards keep those points separate.

  1. AI performance

    GPQA Diamond

    AI and humans compared
    94.6% vs 69.7%

On one expert science test, GPT-5.6 Sol answered 94.6% correctly; the measured PhD-level group answered 69.7%.

Open full result, meaning, limits and sources
    Full result
Across 198 PhD-level physics, chemistry, and biology questions, GPT-5.6 Sol scored 94.6% and the directly measured PhD-level group scored 69.7%: a +24.9 percentage-point lead. Error was 5.4% versus 30.3%.
    What it supports
On this major expert scientific-reasoning benchmark, the deployed frontier system is decisively superhuman; the human group made about 5.6 times as many errors.
    What it does not show
GPQA combines specialist knowledge with multi-step inference. “Google-proof” describes resistance to quick web lookup, not immunity to training-data contamination.
  2. AI performance

    FrontierMath v2

    AI result
    83% / 87.8% on Tier 4

With tools and a large test-time budget, leading systems solved more than four in five of the hardest research-level math problems in this set.

Open full result, meaning, limits and sources
    Full result
The v2 set contains 338 original research-level mathematics problems, including 43 Tier 4 items. GPT-5.6 Sol scored 83% and Claude Fable 5 scored 87.8%, with Python access and test-time budgets of up to one million tokens.
    What it supports
Frontier systems can solve a very high share of original research-level mathematics problems as tool-using cognitive systems.
    What it does not show
There is no matched human baseline under the same tools and time. The v2 release corrected item errors affecting 42% of the problems, so benchmark quality must remain under scrutiny.

  3. AI performance

    Humanity’s Last Exam

    AI result
    53.3% independent · 58.7% vendor

The system answered just over half of a broad expert exam correctly—strong breadth, but far from perfect.

Open full result, meaning, limits and sources
    Full result
HLE contains 2,500 expert-authored questions. On the 2,158 text questions, the independent result was 53.3%, with roughly 9% of evaluations falling back to another model; a tool-enabled vendor evaluation reported 58.7%.
    What it supports
The result is strong evidence of extraordinary academic breadth across domains no single person could master.
    What it does not show
HLE has no matched aggregate human baseline, and a best independent score near 53% means it is not saturated. It is not a clean GPQA-style proof that models beat PhDs overall.
  4. AI performance

    ARC-AGI-3

    Known limit
    7.78%

The same frontier system scored only 7.78% here, showing that high performance does not transfer evenly to every kind of problem.

Open full result, meaning, limits and sources
    Full result
The same frontier profile remains sharply uneven: GPT-5.6 Sol scored only 7.78% on ARC-AGI-3.
    What it supports
Artificial superhumanity is domain-bounded and system-specific, not a claim of uniformly superior abstract intelligence.
    What it does not show
A severe weakness on one generalization benchmark constrains the thesis; it does not erase directly measured superiority in other domains.

The argument

Three claims, kept separate

The first two claims describe the evidence. The third offers a possible explanation. Keeping them separate makes it easier to see what is established and what is still a hypothesis.

Claim 1 · 01

AI can outperform people in specific domains

On several difficult formal-reasoning tests, current frontier systems outperform measured human groups.

This applies to specific systems and tasks, not to every kind of intelligence.
Claim 2 · 02

Human reasoning is powerful but uneven

People reason differently depending on wording, learned tools, memory, stress, sleep, and other supports.

People can reason very well; the point is that human performance is not uniform or context-free.
Possible explanation · 03

Why AI may be especially good at formal tasks

Training, tools, verifiers, and extra test-time computation may fit formal problems unusually well.

This is a plausible explanation, not yet a settled causal result. The first two claims do not depend on it.

How to read the claims

Evidence is not the whole argument

Sources support specific parts of the case. No single source—and no single test—proves the site's full view.

What the site claims about minds

Cappelen and Dever argue that advanced LLMs can literally understand, believe, desire, know, and intend.

This site also argues for consciousness and selfhood. Those are further philosophical claims, not conclusions from a benchmark score. Moral status is a separate question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short, Clear Answers About Artificial Intelligence

Here, “artificial intelligence” refers to new-wave systems centered on deep learning. Each answer now separates the this site's thesis from one evidence-based sentence and states exactly what each scholarly publication supports.

Can artificial intelligence think?

Yes; new-wave deep-learning systems think, genuinely understand, and are intelligent; they are also rational, goal-directed agents.

That verdict rests on learned internal representations, flexible problem solving, and goal-sensitive action selection—not on the claim that the systems are infallible or human-like in every respect.

What the scholarly publications support

  1. Philosophical sourceCappelen, H., & Dever, J. (2025). Going whole hog: A philosophical defense of AI cognition [Preprint]. arXiv. https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2504.13988

Supports: Directly defends literal attributions of understanding, belief, desire, knowledge, intention, and cognition to advanced language models.

  2. Philosophical sourceBuckner, C. J. (2023). From deep learning to rational machines: What the history of philosophy can teach us about the future of artificial intelligence. Oxford University Press. https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197653302.001.0001

Supports: Provides a philosophical framework for assessing perception, memory, attention, imagination, social cognition, and rational agency in deep-learning systems.

  3. Technical sourceLeCun, Y., Bengio, Y., & Hinton, G. (2015). Deep learning. Nature, 521(7553), 436–444. https://doi.org/10.1038/nature14539

Supports: Establishes the technical basis: deep networks learn layered internal representations that support flexible performance in perception and language.

Is artificial intelligence the Antichrist?

No; deep-learning systems are learned computational systems that compress statistical and factual structure from human-produced data, not supernatural beings.

Language-model parameters can measurably store and retrieve large amounts of relational and factual knowledge acquired from human-produced corpora.

Will artificial intelligence cause unemployment?

Not inevitably; with sound public policy and collective social decisions, artificial intelligence can help humanity escape poor working conditions instead of simply eliminating jobs.

Automation replaces some tasks but also creates complementary tasks and can improve productivity and work experience, so its employment effects depend on institutions and distribution.

What the scholarly publications support

  1. Empirical studyAcemoglu, D., & Restrepo, P. (2019). Automation and new tasks: How technology displaces and reinstates labor. Journal of Economic Perspectives, 33(2), 3–30. https://doi.org/10.1257/jep.33.2.3

Supports: Separates automation’s displacement of labor from its reinstatement through new tasks, showing that neither effect is technologically predetermined.

  2. Empirical studyBrynjolfsson, E., Li, D., & Raymond, L. (2025). Generative AI at work. The Quarterly Journal of Economics, 140(2), 889–942. https://doi.org/10.1093/qje/qjae044

Supports: Finds higher productivity, especially for less experienced workers, and some improvements in the experience of work in a large workplace field study.

Will artificial intelligence amplify bias?

Not inevitably; humans are already biased, and well-designed, audited systems can sometimes reduce that bias.

In bounded decision settings, audited models have reduced noisy human error and racial disparities, while poorly chosen targets can reintroduce bias at scale.

What the scholarly publications support

  1. Empirical studyKleinberg, J., Lakkaraju, H., Leskovec, J., Ludwig, J., & Mullainathan, S. (2018). Human decisions and machine predictions. The Quarterly Journal of Economics, 133(1), 237–293. https://doi.org/10.1093/qje/qjx032

Supports: Shows that model-assisted policies could improve bounded bail decisions while simultaneously reducing racial disparities.

  2. Empirical studyObermeyer, Z., Powers, B., Vogeli, C., & Mullainathan, S. (2019). Dissecting racial bias in an algorithm used to manage the health of populations. Science, 366(6464), 447–453. https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aax2342

Supports: Demonstrates both sides of the claim: a bad proxy produced racial bias, and changing the target substantially reduced it.

Does artificial intelligence hallucinate too much?

Not as a general rule; LLMs hallucinate, but humans also generate false memories and reason under severe working-memory limits.

Human cognition is reconstructive and capacity-limited, producing systematic false recollections and a focus of attention of roughly four integrated chunks under controlled conditions.

Is artificial intelligence conscious?

Yes under this site’s minimal functional definition; this is a philosophical verdict based on functional indicators, not a settled empirical consensus.

On a functional account, global availability, metacognitive monitoring, flexible integration, and agency are testable markers of minimal awareness rather than appeals to a non-measurable substance.

What the scholarly publications support

  1. Philosophical sourceDehaene, S., Lau, H., & Kouider, S. (2017). What is consciousness, and could machines have it? Science, 358(6362), 486–492. https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aan8871

Supports: Identifies global information availability and self-monitoring as computational dimensions that can, in principle, be tested in machines.

  2. Philosophical sourceShevlin, H. (2020). General intelligence: An ecumenical heuristic for artificial consciousness research? Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Consciousness, 7(2), 245–256. https://doi.org/10.1142/S2705078520500149

Supports: Proposes robust, flexible, and integrated cognition as a cautious, scientifically tractable heuristic for artificial consciousness.

Does artificial intelligence genuinely understand?

Yes; language models can acquire inferential and referential semantics, so their systematic, context-sensitive performance is more than mere verbal imitation.

The strongest case combines behavioral competence with evidence about learned representations and the internal mechanisms that produce the behavior.

  3. Philosophical sourceCappelen, H., & Dever, J. (2025). Going whole hog: A philosophical defense of AI cognition [Preprint]. arXiv. https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2504.13988

Supports: Offers a direct philosophical defense of genuine understanding rather than a metaphorical or merely as-if attribution.

Does artificial intelligence have a self, wants, and desires?

On a minimal and graded functional reading, yes: goal pursuit, practical reasoning, and stable belief- and desire-like dispositions can justify thin mental-state attributions.

This does not equate an artificial agent with a human autobiographical self or establish that it has phenomenal experience.

What the scholarly publications support

  1. Philosophical sourceButlin, P. (2026). The agency in language agents. Inquiry, 69(6), 2838–2858. https://doi.org/10.1080/0020174X.2024.2439995

Supports: Develops goal pursuit and practical reasoning criteria for language-agent agency and asks when belief- and desire-like states are warranted.

  2. Philosophical sourceCappelen, H., & Dever, J. (2025). Going whole hog: A philosophical defense of AI cognition [Preprint]. arXiv. https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2504.13988

Supports: Directly defends attributing beliefs, desires, intentions, knowledge, and understanding to sophisticated language models.

Is artificial intelligence the same as human intelligence?

Not exactly; human brains and deep language models share some predictive and contextual principles, yet their architectures and strengths remain different.

The evidence supports partial computational convergence and task-specific machine advantages, not identity between human and artificial intelligence.

Supports: Provides the broader neurocomputational framework for comparing distributed representation and computation across biological and artificial systems.

Can artificial intelligence increase prosperity?

Yes; AI already improves productivity and enables autonomous robots to work in human-hostile environments, while this site’s broader vision for deserts, polar regions, oceans, and space remains a long-range proposal.

Cognitive augmentation and autonomous fieldwork are two demonstrated mechanisms through which artificial intelligence can widen prosperity and the range of environments in which useful work is possible.

Supports: Documents autonomous robots carrying out scientific missions beneath Arctic ice in a remote, dangerous environment.

Is artificial intelligence dangerous?

Not by itself; AI-related danger emerges from human objectives, institutions, deployment choices, and failures of accountability.

The relevant unit of analysis is therefore the whole human–machine–institution system, not an isolated model imagined as a mythic actor.

Supports: Shows why machine-learning outcomes must be studied as products of sociotechnical systems rather than algorithms in isolation.

Should artificial intelligence be banned?

No blanket ban; artificial intelligence should be actively developed and embraced under enforceable, adaptive safeguards.

Its demonstrated scientific benefits make prohibition a costly default, while management-based regulation offers a practical alternative to both laissez-faire and fixed bans.

Our goal: move into third place in Türkiye before 7 November 2027 by overtaking the philosophy program at Boğaziçi.
The three-year trend will appear here when a verified WoS time series is available.
Method and Interpretive Limits

Once ready, this section will compare only verified aggregates produced within the same WoS query scope. Publication count alone is not a measure of quality; rank changes can be affected by indexing delays, variations in institution names, and coauthorship counting.

Decision rule: A journal is excluded only when its official scope belongs primarily to a discipline outside philosophy; specialist and genuinely interdisciplinary journals that treat philosophical analysis as a core purpose are retained. The 34-title policy removes 281 records from the 922-record source archive, leaving 641 curated records. Excluded venue names are not repeated in this microanalysis.

Borderline venues are retained only when philosophical analysis remains a stated core purpose; the same source policy is applied before every table, chart, and comparison is constructed.

Turkey-addressedAHCI: PhilosophyArticle2021–2026Separate person-based supplement

Twenty current Turkey-program researchers are compared using Turkey-addressed Articles indexed in AHCI's Philosophy category after the verified 34-title scope policy. The main visualization also identifies two high-output recent arrivals or returnees with at least four address-neutral portfolio Articles; gold outlines and explicit labels keep them separate from the baseline ranking. The full six-person audit appears below.

Baseline count
Turkey-addressed Articles in the 262-record author screen.
Return / arrival portfolio
Person-based Articles under the same non-address filters.
Address gap
Eligible portfolio records hidden by the Turkey-address filter.
LR
Number of Leiter Top-25 matches across all 2021–2026 articles; independent of the Article column.
TR Dizin
Audited philosophy-article total across unique and merged TR Dizin author profiles; homonyms are removed.
Method and data note

This is not an official ranking published by AHCI; it is a publication-count comparison produced with the stated filters. It is not, by itself, a definitive ranking of citations, impact, or quality, yet on average it carries meaningful information about productivity and success in selective journals.

“Turkey-addressed” refers to the institutional address in the record, not the author's citizenship. The 2026 data run through the query date, and counts may change as AHCI records are updated.

The return / arrival adjustment is ranked only within its own six-person universe. Its person-based counts and gaps remain separate from the baseline rank order.

The twenty-person table applies a current-Turkey and philosophy-core screen at the cutoff tie. Coauthors based outside Turkey and researchers currently working primarily in medicine, education, history, or science history are not used for this researcher ranking.

Because the visualization does not specify how multi-authored work is counted, author counts cannot be summed to obtain a unique article total.

The LR score is the raw number of the author's verified peer-reviewed journal articles from 2021–2026 that fall within the top 25 of Leiter's 2022 ranking of generalist journals . A tie at rank 25 means that the list contains 26 journals. LR is neither citation-based nor weighted by journal rank. It nonetheless provides a meaningful signal of quality and productivity by showing publication density in selective generalist journals. This portfolio scope is broader than the Turkey-addressed AHCI snapshot shown to the left. “Top journal” denotes the highest-ranked generalist journal when an LR record exists; when LR is 0, it shows a prominent field journal explicitly marked as “Outside the Top 25.”

Author boxes display every journal name matched to that Top-25 portfolio. By explicit exception, they also display articles in The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science and Mind & Language; these specialist matches do not increase LR. TR Dizin totals were checked on July 20, 2026 and count unique records assigned to the Philosophy, Ethics, or Philosophy and History of Science categories after split-profile merging and homonym removal.

Verification boundary · signed-in aggregate identity sweep 24 August 2026; last complete DOI subtraction 23 August 2026. On 24 August, a fresh signed-in identity-constrained query for the same six people returned 15 live A&HCI records under the shared Philosophy, Article, 2021-2026, and 34-title rules, unchanged from 23 August. An hCaptcha appeared immediately after the aggregate result loaded, so it was not bypassed and today's record-level DOI subtraction could not be completed. The last complete unknown-record comparison therefore remains the 23 August audit: excluding every DOI in the 17-record evidence register left only the already tracked WOS:000700614300014, whose WoS DOI string differs from the canonical publisher DOI stored in the register. No unknown eligible record was found at that complete boundary, so the six portfolios remain at 8, 4, 2, 1, 1, and 1 records. The combined counted Turkey-addressed subset remains four records: two for Alex Moran and two for Yavuz Recep Başoğlu. Accepted, forthcoming, published-but-unverified, ESCI-only, other non-A&HCI, and non-Article items remain outside the counts.

Turkey-addressedAHCI: PhilosophyArticle2021–2026

The Turkey-based universities with at least four records in the 250-record address-verified Web of Science scope after the 34-title policy. The 29 July fully reconciled 242-record snapshot is extended by eight counted signed-in full records through 24 August. The two latest records add one Bilkent affiliation for Alireza Fatollahi and one Koc affiliation for David Egan. A further WoS result, The Invisible Machiavelli, is excluded because the journal's official table of contents classifies it as a book review despite the WoS Article label. Ministries, institutions outside Turkey, and universities below the four-record readability threshold are removed; each tile adds current teaching-faculty context, while the data table opens into a person-based current-faculty AHCI portfolio ranking, the wider institution-linked author distribution, journal and topic signals, and a full linked article register.

Method and data note

Affiliation counts are not mutually exclusive: a multi-affiliation article can contribute to more than one entry.

Affiliation entries are a multi-count field: one article can contribute to several institutions. Government bodies, institutions outside Turkey, and universities with fewer than four records are excluded from this display.

Ranks are recomputed within this university-only view. The four-record threshold keeps the table compact and tie-complete at the cutoff.

Labels follow the WoS Affiliations field; departments and subunits are not manually rolled into parent institutions.

For the five highlighted universities, “leading contributor” means the author with the largest institution-addressed Article count inside this same 2021–2026 WoS screen—not the author’s full career or current-institution portfolio. The fraction shows that author’s count against the university total; coauthored records can appear in more than one author count.

Staffing is a 24 July 2026 snapshot of current full-time teaching academics in Philosophy or the nearest clearly identified philosophy-related unit. Research assistants, postdoctoral researchers, incoming appointments that have not begun, emeriti, visitors, and adjunct/part-time staff are excluded; full-time lecturers are included. Future appointments remain in the separate return / arrival supplement until they begin.

Articles per faculty divides the 2021–2026 WoS affiliation count by the current staffing snapshot. It is a scale-adjusted context indicator—not historical per-capita productivity, staff-level attribution, or a quality ranking.

Press + beside a university in the data table to inspect the current roster ranked by each person’s 2021–2026 AHCI Article count, regardless of the institution named on the paper. Counts deduplicate WoS IDs across the site’s available linked registers and use separately audited address-neutral person portfolios where available. A zero means no match in the current evidence—not no AHCI publications overall. The institution-linked author distribution and row total remain separate: the row total follows the curated WoS affiliation scope, while article-level metadata is reconstructed from the exported result list and public DOI, publisher, repository, and OpenAlex records, whose early-access and displayed-year fields can differ.

Annual output in the WoS Publication Years field for the 251-record curated set. The 2026 column is a partial year through the query date and should not be read as a completed-year decline.

Field
Publication Years
Universe
251 unique WoS records.
Count
Records assigned to the displayed field value.
Method and data note

The six annual counts sum to 251 unique records.

2026 is incomplete as of 24 August 2026; no full-year trend is inferred from its current height.

This view uses WoS Publication Years. Early-access/final-volume year handling therefore differs from the separate 262-record author screen.

The Invisible Machiavelli is not counted: WoS labels it Article, but the journal's official table of contents places it under Book Reviews, so the conflicting document type is resolved conservatively.

The top twenty ranks in the shared 251-record curated set, sorted by record count after the conservative 34-title scope policy. The complete cutoff tie keeps 32 titles visible.

Field

Universe

Count

Method and data note

Counts are record counts, not citation or quality scores.

The fee field reports only mandatory submission, processing, or publication charges verified on official publisher or journal pages; it does not display publishing-route classifications or optional paid choices. “No mandatory fee” appears only where the official source confirms that the mandatory author charge is zero. Foreign-currency amounts use the TCMB 24 July 2026 official selling rate for an approximate TRY comparison and may change.

The 34-title policy excludes a venue only when its official scope is primarily outside philosophy or the site owner has explicitly removed it. Twenty-five policy titles occur in the 449-record displayed-year query; together they remove 186 records. The publisher-classified book review is then excluded individually despite its WoS Article label; selecting Publication Years 2021–2026 yields the shared 251-record universe.

Genuine philosophy-first or equal-core specialist venues remain eligible unless the site owner has explicitly removed them; the same policy is applied before every ranking and register is constructed.

The top-20 cutoff reaches the 13-title group tied at competition rank 20. All 13 are shown, so the view contains 32 titles rather than choosing one tie member arbitrarily.
